The Jancy Slugger cobalt steel annular cutter with titanium nitride (TiN) coating, 1” depth, rail-cutter design, and a 3/4” annular cutter shank is used to create through holes as deep as 1” in a range of materials, with best performance in hardened rail and hard-to-machine materials as well as mild steel and stainless steel. An annular cutter removes only the circumference of a through hole (extending through the workpiece), releasing the central material as a slug when the hole has been cut. The center-free design of the tool results in energy efficiency and reduced cycle time: the operator can produce holes three to five times faster than with a conventional twist drill that must convert the entire hole into chips. In addition, this tool’s multiple cutting edges can create an accurate, burr-free hole that minimizes the need for secondary operations such as pre-drilling and reaming. Cobalt steel is harder and tougher than high-speed steel, so it helps increase tool life and it can be used to cut tougher metals such as cast iron, nickel alloys, austenitic stainless, and aircraft alloys. Titanium nitride is a gold-colored ceramic coating that combines hardness with low friction for extended cutting tool life and permits faster cutting speeds than with uncoated tools. This tool’s annular cutter shank has two Weldon flats ground into a portion of the sides to provide a secure hold to help prevent slippage in drill presses, mills, or lathes. In this Jancy tool series, annular cutters can create holes of various diameters with a depth of cut as great as 1”. Annular cutters are hollow drill bits that cut only the periphery of a hole, reducing the torque and horsepower requirements for drilling in many applications. Because they remove less material than standard twist drill bits, they have faster cutting speeds and use less energy in comparison with twist drills and are more efficient than metal hole saws. The multiple cutting edges on annular cutters produce accurate, burr-free holes without the need for pilot holes, minimizing the need for secondary operations such as pre-drilling, step drilling, or reaming. Jancy Engineering manufactures Slugger portable magnetic drills and annular cutters, as well as metal working equipment for the fabrication trade. The company, founded in 1957 and headquartered in Davenport, IA, provides tools that meet ANSI standards to steel fabricators and erectors, machinists and maintenance personnel, and truck body and ship builders, among others.

  • Center-free design creates through holes by cutting only the periphery of the hole for greater productivity in comparison to twist drills
  • Multiple cutting edges create a high-quality hole that minimizes the need for secondary operations such as pre-drilling and reaming
  • Titanium nitride (TiN) coating combines hardness with low friction for extended tool life and faster cutting
  • Cobalt steel is harder than high-speed steel, for increased tool life and for work in tougher metals
  • Rail cutter design for creating holes in hardened rail
